Affiliated colleges of BHU

Banaras Hindu University is a central university located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. The University was established on 4th Feb 1916 by Madan Mohan Malviya and is the largest residential university in Asia in terms of Area. The main campus of BHU scatters over 1300 acres and rests on the estate donated by the Kashi Naresh to Malviya Ji. Banaras Hindu University has an additional campus at Barkaccha in Mirzapur apart from the campus in Varanasi. The south campus or Rajiv Gandhi South Campus covers an area of 2700 acres. The campus also houses the Agriculture Science Centre. The academic structure of BHU comprises of six institutes along with 14 personnel and 140 departments. Apart from the colleges and institutes, BHU also has two Senior Secondary Schools, Kendriya Vidyalaya and the Central Hindu School.

Main Campus

The main campus of BHU is located on the southern horizon of Varanasi, nearly the banks of the Ganga brook. The campus configuration of the university is in a semicircle with crisscrossing freeways or roads laid out along with the radial . On the main campus, there 60 boarding house or taverns are offering residential accommodation to the students of the BHU. On-campus housing facility is also available for the full-time faculty/staff. The most distinguished juncture is the Shri Vishwanath Mandir. The foundation of this temple of knowledge along with affiliated colleges of BHU was laid in March 1931 and took approximately three decades to complete. Students from various affiliated colleges of BHU also come here to visit Vishwanath Temple and to enjoy cold coffee. Another integral past of BHU is the Bharat Kala Bhavana which is an art and archaeological museum inaugurated in January 1920.

Rajiv Gandhi South Campus

In the south campus, we have The Agriculture Science Centre with an emphasis on research in agriculture techniques, agroforestry and biodiversity pertinent to the vindhya range region. Also, in the campus there is the facility of lecture complex, a library, student hostels and faculty housing along with administrative/ managerial offices. The college is naturally beautiful and makes the learning hub a peaceful temple of knowledge. South campus has great infrastructure with a large playground and highly equipped laboratory with all types of equipment and instruments available. The campus witnesses an overall competitive environment.

Affiliated colleges in BHU

There are four colleges in affiliation with BHU:

1. Arya Mahila Mahavidyalaya

The post graduate college provides a comprehensive and relevant education to girls so that they can ensure a great future for themselves and set a foundation for a strong society. The college only provides admission to female students who have already qualified the BHU entrance test. Arya Mahila Mahavidyalaya was established in 1956 by Shri Arya Mahila Hitakarini Mahapararishad and is located in the heart of Varanasi. The college offers several courses including:

  • Bachelors degree in arts, social sciences and commerce
  • UG courses in education (B.Ed.)
  • PG courses in Sociology, Economics and linguistics.

2. DAV Post Graduate College

Located in the heart of Varanasi, DAV is a degree college in affiliation with BHU and recognition from UGC. NAAC has bestowed the college with an A+ rating in 2017. The foundation of college was put in 1938 by Pandit Ram Narayan Mishra and Gauri Shankar Prasad. Several courses including Undergraduate, and Postgraduate courses in Arts and Commerce streams are offered by DAV after one qualifies the BHU entrance examination. DAV has recently also initiated offering Research courses (PhD) in its premises.

3.Vasanta College For Women

Vasanta College is a women’s college located in the Rajghat area of Varanasi. The college was established in 1913 by Dr. Annie Besant. Having a large campus of over 300 acres makes it one of the most beautiful colleges of the city. The holy river Ganga at its side magnifies the beauty of the college a hundred times. The college also provides dispensary, N-List library, hostel facility,psychological center and gym facilities to its students .

4.Vasant Kanya Mahavidyalaya

Vasant Kanya Mahavidyalaya is popularly known as VKM among the students and people of Varanasi. The college was established on July 10th 1964 by Dr. Rohit Mehta. The motto of the college is “Education as Service”. VKM offers several courses including:

  • UG COURSES in arts, economics, social sciences, home sciences, linguistics and music
  • PG COURSES in sociology, home science, English, Hindi and psychology etc.
  • Doctorate Degree in Philosophy
